Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Employment Opportunity- Dakota Language Writer/Coordinator – Term (2020.06.26)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN) is seeking a self motivated and enthusiastic person to coordinate the development of a Dakota Language Law and to assist in ongoing SVDN Lands Research. The goal of the Dakota Language Law is the preservation and revitalization of the Dakota Language guided by our SVDN Language experts and citizens 60 plus. The proposed law is to be drafted, reviewed and ready for a vote in March 2021.

Abilities and Skills:

  • The candidate must have credentials in language development
  • The candidate must be fluent in the Dakota language
  • Have experience in coordinating projects
  • To research and review other language laws
  • To develop communication materials pertaining to the Dakota Language Law process
  • To participate in self government communication and engagement sessions
  • Have experience in conducting interviews with Elders/Knowledge Holders on proposed LanguageLaw and Lands Research
  • To provide translation during the interview process and transcribe into written summary
  • Have experience in group facilitation with Elders/Knowledge Holders
  • To draft a working document of a Dakota Language Law in conjunction with SVDN Legal Counsel
  • Have excellent oral and written communication
  • Be able to work independently and in a team environment
  • Be proficient in computers and programs: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.


  • Minimum High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
  • Must have a minimum 3-5 years experience in either language development or teaching
  • Demonstrated experience in group facilitation
  • Demonstrated experience working with Elders/Citizens of First Nations
  • Demonstrated experience is translation, interviews and preparation of summaries, and reports
  • Knowledge of community cultural customs, traditions and language would be an asset
  • Computer Skills required
  • Valid Drivers License & access to a vehicle
