The Land Based Cultural Worker will coordinate and support all aspects of cultural knowledge transfer and planning within Dakota Tiwahe Services. The Land Based Cultural Worker will provide traditional teachings and ceremonies in a safe and acceptable environment and will coordinate access to Elders and Traditional people to meet the needs of Dakota Tiwahe Services, as well as working with the children, youth, and families as the primary audience. The Land Based Cultural Worker will also work to promote cultural awareness, safety and competency within Dakota Tiwahe Services, as well as with Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN) children and families to promote healing and reconciliation.
• To build upon the skills and knowledge within Dakota Tiwahe Services and the SVDN community of local and traditional Indigenous ways of life
• Ensure the provision of Indigenous cultural teachings and knowledge within all aspects of programming within Dakota Tiwahe Services and to ensure safe and appropriate cultural practices and boundaries
• Act as a cultural resource and support as required
• Promote healing and reconciliation for SVDN urban Indigenous children, youth and families
• Facilitate talking, teaching, and healing circles, with a priority to services and supports for Indigenous children, youth, and families
• Other duties as required
• Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach
• Knowledge and experience working with urban Indigenous children, youth and families in a healing and reconciliation capacity
• Exceptional knowledge of Indigenous historical and contemporary issues
• An Asset: Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies and/or combination of an equivalent and relevant education would be considered
• Fluency in the Dakota language is an asset
• Successful completion of Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search & Child Abuse Registry Check, or proof of submission
• Flexibility is a must; hours may vary depending on need
