SVDN Employment Opportunity- Community Addictions Worker- SVDNHealth Centre (2021.02.19)

Position Summary:  Reporting to the Health Director, the Community Addictions Worker will implement and deliver programs and services to clients and the community of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. This will include but is not limited to, conducting client assessments and referrals, rehabilitative counselling to individuals and/or family members concerned with an individual’s involvement with alcohol, drugs, or gambling.

  • Knowledge and skill related to individual and group counselling services to adults whose primary concerns are alcohol, drugs and/or gambling.
  • Ability to match treatment services to client’s unique circumstances.
  • Motivational Interviewing techniques/coaching skills.
  • Collaboratively work and participate within a multi-disciplinary team within SVDN health services, and in the context of a provincial organization, to ensure a consistent AFM approach.
  • Participate in committees, teams or work groups at the local and provincial level as requested by the Director and Chief and Council. 
  • Participates in Team Building efforts within the Community Health Team environment.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships and regular communication with community and other related organizations relevant to clients needs.
  • Working willingness and ability to take direction and guidance accordingly
  • Some weekend and evening work required.
  • Performs other related functions as directed by the Health Director.


  • Degree in Social Sciences or a related field 
  • Minimum two-year supervised counselling experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills related to assessment, individual and group counselling
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal communication and documentation skills
  • Knowledge of the addictions and mental health field(s)
  • Essential experience working from a client-centered perspective 
  • Training and/or experience in the utilization of motivational interviewing techniques
  • Experience in developing, planning, preparing, and facilitating educational material and community activities 
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain current and accurate confidential records of client files
  • Broad range of computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office products, promotional material design and data management
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search, Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check and Clear Child Abuse Registry Check required
  • Valid drivers license and must be willing to respond to travel requirements deemed necessary for community health business
  • Must be alcohol/drug/substance abuse free for two years
  • Knowledge of First Nation cultural customs, values, and traditions required
  • Commitment to Sioux Valley Dakota Nation mission, policies, and Dakota values
