Background:
In November 2019 the Election Law Committee was established by the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN) Chief and Council and mandated to review and make amendments to the “Sioux Valley Dakota Oyate Election Law #2015.11.27-01”. The intent was to make improvements and enhance this law and ensure consistency with the SVDN Constitution. The Committee developed a workplan to review the law, meet with community, and seek feedback through surveys. The result of community engagement and Committee review is now presented to the community in the proposed law.
In November 2019 the Citizenship Committee was established by the SVDN Chief and Council and mandated to develop a proposed new Citizenship Law that would see SVDN determine who is a “citizen” and remove this from the Indian Act process. The Committee conducted a review of a previously drafted citizenship law, made revisions based on feedback from community through in person sessions and surveys. The resulting review and recommendations from community is the resulting proposed “Sioux Valley Dakota Oyate Citizenship Law”.
Both Committees are available to discuss these laws at the law readings and in person sessions on April 9 and 19, 2021 at the SVDN powwow grounds. We encourage community to attend the law readings and in person sessions to hear information and ask questions.
Both the law reading, and in-person sessions will be a come and go style while following current Public Health Orders. A maximum amount of people will be allowed in the rooms, and after each session, the rooms will be sanitized for the next group to meet with Committee.
Public Health Measures
Maximum of 2 people will be allowed to meet with the committees at a time. Masks must be worn, contact tracing questions will be asked and social distancing measures will be enforced.
