SVDN Employment Opportunity – Fire Protection Officer (10.16.20) (Extended)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Sioux Valley Dakota Oyate Fire Protection Officer is responsible for the organization and direction of the volunteer Fire Department in order to ensure that loss of life, property or injury as a result of a fire is prevented and/or minimized.

DUTIES:

  1. Develop, review and implement all fire fighting policies and procedures in accordance with the municipal by law, federal and provincial legislation
    1. Establish appropriate fire fighting techniques
    1. Plan fire fighting strategies
    1. Liaise with the Emergency Response Team
    1. Ensure fire fighting policies and procedures are strictly adhered to
    1. Make recommendation on changes to the fire fighting by law
  1. Recruit, train and direct the activities of volunteer fire fighters in order to ensure that trained fire fighters are available in the event of a fire
    • Recruit and orient fire fighters
    • Ensure high level of morale among fire fighters
    • Facilitate the training of fire fighters
    • Evaluate the performance of the fire fighters
    • Discipline and/or dismiss fire fighter if necessary 
  2. Inspect firefighting equipment is in order to ensure appropriate equipment is available as required
    • Inspect the fire truck on a regular basis
    • Inspect fire fighting equipment and apparatus on a regular basis
    • Make recommendations on the replacement and/or repair of equipment 
    • Make inspections of places of business to ensure compliance with regulations
    • Take sole command in the event of a fire in order to ensure a safe, effective and controlled response
    • Make all decisions concerning the appropriate response to and method fighting a fire
    • Direct all activities at the scene of the fire
    • Ensure that firefighters are responding in a safe and appropriate manner
    • Investigate the cause of the fire once it has been extinguished
    • Maintain records on incidence of fire, injuries and loss of property
    • Prepare reports on all areas of fire fighting
    • Monitor/Create a firefighting budget
    • Implement fire prevention education and awareness programs
    • Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 2 years diploma in relation to Fire Fighting/Fire College
  • Minimum 5 years experience in Fire Fighting field
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule
  • Able to facilitate training
  • Computer knowledge
  • Valid Manitoba drivers license and reliable vehicle
  • Subject to Criminal Record Check
