A sea of red flooded the roads of Sioux Valley, as community members participated in a walk for MMIW (Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women) on Friday May 5th 2023. The event began at 10:30 in the morning, with community members arriving at the Heather Merrick Memorial Cross for a brief introduction from Freddie Eastman followed by a prayer.
Buses from Sioux Valley’s Elementary and High School dropped off students allowing them to participate as well. Members showed their support by wearing red clothing, creating signs and wearing face paint. The walk was followed by a quick BBQ lunch at the Pow Wow grounds as a thank you to all those who participated. Community member Margret Tacan gave a quick speech, along with horse carriage rides given by Travis Mazawasicuna. At the end of the event, a small log fire was created for anyone who wanted to commemorate loved ones one last time.
