SVDN FNSO Mandate Signing (2023.11.20) The FNSO – First Nation Safety Officer Mandate was officially signed November 20, 2023 by Chief Vincent Tacan and his council with the Virden RCMP and officials from Justice and members of SVDN present. It is at this time we would like to take the opportunity to highlight for you what the Mandate means for the community of Sioux Valley and how that will look moving forward. The First Nation Safety Officer Mandate includes some enforcement powers. Some of the areas they will be able to enforce and how that has changed can be explained this way: Peace Officer Authority as designated by the PSA to Safety Officers, First Nations Safety Officers, and Institutional Safety Officers – “They have all the powers, duties, privileges’ and protectionsn of a Peace Officer, at common law and under the enactments as designed within the Operating Agreement between the Province of Manitoba and the respective municipality.” More specifically, SVDN FNSO’s will now be able to enforce some of the following Acts: The Highway Traffic Act Examples would be: Non registered or non licensed drivers can be ticketed along with other Highway Traffic Acts. The Minors Intoxicating Substances Control Act SVDN By-Laws The Off-Road Vehicles Act The Liquor and Gaming Act The Child and Family Services Act Public Safety and Crime Prevention Victims and Social Services Arrests Search and Seizures Administrative tasks such as: Note taking, report writing, interview basics, and court preparation. Some of the other duties will include: Warrant Assist, Radar Speed, and DUI.
