SVDN Health – MEMORANDUM:  Advisory on Services No Longer Funded Under Jordan’s Principle for Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (2025.02.19)

MEMORANDUM

To: All Relevant Stakeholders of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation From: Wipazoka Wakpa Oyate Jordan’s Principle Date: February 18, 2025 Subject: Advisory on Services No Longer Funded Under Jordan’s Principle for Sioux Valley Dakota Nation

Purpose: This memorandum serves to inform the stakeholders of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation about the recent changes to the funding provisions under Jordan’s Principle, specifically regarding services and supports that will no longer be funded for First Nations children within the community.

Background: In line with updated regulations under Jordan’s Principle, several services previously funded will no longer be eligible. These changes are intended to ensure that funding is directed towards essential services that are critical to the health, education, and well-being of First Nations children. The updates apply to all community members of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

Services No Longer Funded:

    • 1. Non-Essential Cosmetic Procedures: Cosmetic surgeries or procedures not medically required, such as elective aesthetic surgeries or treatments, will no longer be covered. Funding will only be provided for medically necessary procedures.
    •
    • 2. Services Covered by Other Government Programs: Health and social services that are covered by provincial, territorial, or federal programs (e.g., regular healthcare services under Manitoba Health) will no longer be funded under Jordan’s Principle. These services should be accessed through the appropriate provincial health insurance plans.
    •
    • 3. General Social Services: Non-crisis social services that are not directly related to the health or educational needs of First Nations children are no longer eligible for funding under Jordan’s Principle. This includes general child welfare services not linked to urgent care needs.
    •
    • 4. Schooling and Education Costs Beyond Core Needs: Funding for standard educational costs (tuition, school supplies, uniforms, etc.) will no longer be provided. However, special education supports and educational services directly related to a child’s health or disability may still be eligible for funding.
    •
    • 5. Non-Medical Supplies and Products: Basic household goods, general clothing, and non-medical supplies that are not essential to the health or well-being of the child will no longer be covered. The principle is focused on ensuring services related to urgent health and safety needs.
    •
    • 6. Out-of-Country Medical Services (Except in Emergencies): Services rendered outside of Canada, except in urgent medical situations where the necessary care is unavailable in Canada, will no longer be funded under Jordan’s Principle.
    •
    • 7. Adult Services: Services and supports for adults, including those over the age of 18, are not covered under Jordan’s Principle. The principle applies exclusively to children under the age of 18 in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
    •

Implications for Sioux Valley Dakota Nation:

  • • Community members and service providers must be aware of these changes to prevent confusion and delays in service provision.
  • Families and caregivers should be made aware of the updated funding guidelines to ensure children can access the services they need in a timely manner.

Conclusion: These changes are designed to streamline funding to ensure that Jordan’s Principle continues to provide essential services to the children of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. Stakeholders should familiarize themselves with the new guidelines and ensure that services provided align with the updated eligibility criteria.
