SVDN Education – Phys. Ed. Health Classes (2024.11.05)

Dear Sioux Valley Elementary Parents/Guardians:

We hope all students and families are doing well. This letter is to inform students (grade 4 to 8) and their parent(s)/guardians that Health Classes are starting November 12, 2024 as part of the Physical Education curriculum. We also want to take this time to introduce Mr. Jason Taylor as the current Physical Education teacher, along with Mrs. Jolene Taylor as the student support role: Winyan Wichohan.
Following the physical education curriculum, students will break into two groups (male and female) and learn comprehensive health studies that include: healthy relationships, body awareness, puberty, gender roles, decision-making and supports, and reproductive systems. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor will be teaching the health classes and interconnecting Dakod Wichohan teachings throughout the classes, utilizing the foundational teachings of our Dakota Oyate: Wao’hoda: Respect, Wawo’kiya: To be helpful, Wo’wichake: Truth, Wopida: To give thanks, and Waun’sida: To have compassion.
The goal of the Physical Education Health Curriculum is to prepare our children and students to become a good relative and to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for students to grow and develop into responsible adults. Teaching students to be a good relative is valuable in helping them develop important life skills and qualities that will establish a foundation throughout their lives. We understand that learning about reproductive health may cause uncomfortable feelings in students, if there are any questions, comments, or concerns please contact Principal Mr. Bruce Lyons at 204-674-4632 or Vice Principal Mrs. Wasicuna-Smoke at 204-818-0886.
We are happy to support students any way possible,
Thank you
