SVDN Health – Prevent Cockroach Infestations (2025.03.25)

NOTICE OF TENANT RESPONSIBILITIES TO PREVENT COCKROACH INFESTATIONS

Maintaining a clean and pest-free home is a shared responsibility. Cockroaches are resilient pests that can spread disease and create unsanitary living conditions. To help prevent a cockroach infestation, Sioux Valley Dakota Nation residents are encouraged to follow these best practices:

1. Maintain Cleanliness

  • Keep kitchens and food preparation areas clean and free of crumbs and spills.
  • Store food in sealed containers and avoid leaving pet food exposed.
  • Dispose of garbage regularly in tightly sealed bins.
  • Clean appliances, countertops, and floors frequently.

2. Eliminate Moisture Sources

  • Fix leaking pipes, faucets, and drains.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
  • Empty and clean pet water bowls and ensure there is no standing water.

3. Reduce Hiding and Breeding Grounds

  • Declutter by removing unnecessary cardboard, paper, and bags.
  • Seal cracks and crevices around baseboards, cabinets, and walls.
  • Install door sweeps and repair damaged window screens.

4. Monitor and Respond Quickly

  • Regularly inspect your home for signs of cockroaches, such as droppings, egg cases, or an unpleasant musty odor.
  • Utilize baits, traps, or insecticides if necessary, following all safety instructions.
  • Contact the Sioux Valley Housing Department for severe or persistent infestations.

5. Community Responsibility

  • Report sightings of cockroaches to local authorities if living in a multi-unit complex.
  • Collaborate with neighbors to ensure a pest-free environment for all.

By following these preventative measures, Sioux Valley Dakota Nation tenants can significantly reduce the risk of cockroach infestations and maintain a healthy living space.
