Election Law Review Committee
In October 2019, the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN) Chief and Council posted notices seeking community members to participate in a new Election Law Review Committee. Community members were asked to provide a formal application of interest, after a review of letters, leadership chose the following members to make up the new Committee: Wally Essie, Bessie Genia, Melissa Hotain, Frank McKay, Tennyson Pratt, Rusty Taylor and Tim Wasicuna. The Committee encompasses a good cross section of membership both off and on reserve and each have a genuine interest in ensuring a thorough and accountable review process that will result in recommendations for change to enhance the existing law
The current SVDN Election Law was passed in November 2015 and was utilized to run the Chief and Council elections in 2016 and 2018. Based on the experience and feedback stemming from these last two elections, it was identified that there needed to be additional enhancements to this law to ensure it will run more smoothly for the next SVDN election.
The Election Law Review Committee will undertake a review of the current law, provide information and seek feedback from community members both on and off reserve. The Committee has identified a need to ensure community discussions first to hear issues and concerns with the current law, before developing recommended options for change. The recommended changes will be put to a vote in a revised law in the spring of 2021 before the next SVDN Chief and Council election in the fall of 2021.
The Committee meets twice a month and has developed a timeline and workplan to guide the review which includes community consultations and discussion. Introductory sessions were held in Sioux Valley, Brandon and Winnipeg in February 2020. Unfortunately COVID-19 has impacted the ability to meet normally and as a result the Committee has developed surveys to seek feedback and information on various sections of the current SVDN Election Law.
The Committee will be part of a “Meet the Committees” session in Sioux Valley on Tuesday, July 14th, 2020 outside the Self Government Office. Other planned outdoor events will be scheduled for the latter part of July and August. The Committee encourages all community members to participate in these sessions and will provide an opportunity for membership to provide their feedback through email at: email@example.com
Thank you in advance for your participation and feedback, we look forward to meeting and dialoguing with all the SVDN Oyate.
