Oyate’ Omnic’iya Tipi Grand Opening A Success (2022.05.26)

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation held a Grand Opening ceremony on Thursday, May 26, 2022 for our new Governance building, officially named “Oyate’ Omnic’iya Tipi” which means “The Peoples Meeting Lodge“. This new building houses SVDN’s departments for Governance, Finance, Membership, Social Assistance, Human Resources and Chief & Council.

The Oyate’ Omnic’iya Tipi grand opening featured opening remarks from Chief Jennifer Bone and Council members Jon Bell, Tim Whitecloud and Michelle Rosmus. The day featured several dignitaries and distinguished guests, some giving additional comments and baring gifts. In attendance were AFN Regional Chief Cindy Woodhouse, Keeseekoowenin Chief Norman Bone representing the West Region Tribal Council, Canupawakpa Chief Lola Thunderchild, Brandon City Council member Jeff Fawcett. Keller Construction’s Evan Keller took to the mic to express how thankful he was that Keller Construction was selected to build the new building located in the heart of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

After opening comments and the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony, there were some light refreshments served for those in attendance, along with an opportunity to tour the new building. The hallways and offices adorned with indigenous art work, sculptures and traditional items. After touring, many were offered the opportunity to take a trip to view SVDN’s bison herd, which includes, 8 white buffalo, the most recent born just this year.

The Oyate’ Omnic’iya Tipi is a 3-story building, with approximately 19 offices, a training room, Council Chambers and 2 smaller meeting rooms. It is currently housing approximately 40 staff members, including Chief & Council. As Sioux Valley Dakota Nations continues to strive forward, this building will serve as a home base for many years to come.
