SVDN Education Notice – Solar Eclipse (2024.04.05)

April 05, 2024

This rare event will take place on Monday, April 8. The next solar eclipse that can be seen in our area will not happen again until 2044 and so this will be a very important learning experience for our children. To that end, teachers will arrange an opportunity for each student to view the eclipse briefly through special glasses that meet the safety requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard. The viewing will take place one student at a time, through the window in the school hallway, and only after teaching is provided about safety and the importance of never viewing the sun with unprotected eyes. The viewing will not be mandatory – students can opt out – and as a further safety precaution, there will be no outdoor recess on that day. In Manitoba, the partial eclipse will begin at 12:54 p.m. It will take two-and-a-half hours for the moon to move across the sun from left to right. The maximum eclipse will take place at 2:01 p.m. and will be over at 3:08 p.m.
