Bear Witness Day (Also known as Spirit Bear Day) is May 10. On this day we celebrate Spirit Bear’s birthday. Canada had been given May 10, 2016 as a deadline to fully implement Jordan’s Principle, however, it took three more non-compliance orders and several more years before Canada acted.
Who is Spirit Bear? Spirit Bear is a member of Carrier Sekani Tribal Council. He represents kids all over Canada dedicated to taking part in reconciliation and equality.
Why is it Important? Bear Witness Day is important because it helps bring awareness to Jordan’s Principle. It also helps end discrimination against First Nations children, allowing them to grow up with their culture unafraid and proud.
