Notice of Nomination Meeting:
Tuesday August 15, 2023 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Election of one (1) Chief and five (5) Councillors
Under the authority of the Sioux Valley Oyate Election Law, a nomination meeting for the election for one (1)Chief and five (5) Councillors of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation for a two (2) year term shall be held on:
Tuesday, August 15 2023, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm (3 hours) at the SVDN Veterans Hall
An Elector can nominate a Candidate or second the nomination of a Candidate:
(a) By delivering or sending by mail or email a nomination and a completed, signed and witnessed voter declaration form to the Electoral Officer before the time set for the nomination meeting: or
(b) Orally, at the nomination meeting.
An Elector may nominate or second a nomination for no more than two (2) Candidates.
An Elector wishing to be a Candidate must attend the Nomination Meeting to sign a declaration accepting the nomination and attesting to their eligibility to be a Candidate.
Eligibility: Must be a registered member of SVDN, must be 30 years of age for the position of Chief, must be 21 years of age for the position of Councillor, must be nominated as a Candidate pursuant to the provisions of the SVDN Oyate Election Law, Election deposit of $400.00 for Chief and $200.00 for Councillor, Completed a negative drug test (at the Candidates cost), Child Abuse Registry dated within (3) months of the nomination meeting (at the Candidates cost), Grade twelve 12 education or equivalent (sixty 60 years of age or over not required), Criminal Record Check dated within (3) months of the nomination meeting (at the Candidates cost)and may not be convicted of a indictable offense. Has not been convicted of a Summary conviction within five(5) years of the date of the nomination meeting. All criteria must be submitted to the Electoral Officer thirty(30) days following the nomination meeting.
If an Elector wants to receive a mail-in ballot, they must make a written request (mail-in ballot request form) tothe Electoral Officer that includes a copy of their proof of identity in accordance with the Sioux Valley DakotaOyate Election Law.
If any Elector wants to receive information from candidates, the Elector can agree to have his or her address released to the Candidates.
The Election shall be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm local time for Sioux Valley Dakota Nation at the SVDN Veterans Hall. Additional polls will be held at the Victoria Inn -Salon 3, 3550 Victoria Ave, Brandon MB R7B 2R4 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 19, 2023, and at the Radisson Hotel -Room Ambassador D, 288 Portage Ave, Winnipeg MB R3C 0B8 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
